end of line problems

every time I edit my Makefile I get these damn 'unexpected end of line
error' problems.. I've written a small program to fix this error but I was
wondering what editor others used to avoid this or how you avoided it? I
hate vi so thats just not an option as I never bothered to learn it, I use
'joe' or 'pico' mostly because of ease of use.
