A tank is, in the technical sense, the person whom is fighting the
same mobile that you are and getting hit by that mobile. In essence,
the person who is leading the battle attack.

For instance, you are fighting "The Penultimate Prophet, Bob", who
always writes his prophecies in upper case letters, a habbit he
developed in his home land of AOLin (a magical land that has more
stupid faeries than not [although there is a small group of people
that are acceptable in society that live in AOLin]). All this is
beside the point, though... So, there you are, hitting Bob and Bob
is hitting you. Now, your friend jumps in and he's hitting Bob and
Bob's still hitting you. Ta'da! You've just become a tank, who
all your friends that are beating on Bob, too, are hiding behind.

Call it old fashioned, but on an old Circle 2.2 I used to play, me
and my friends would group up and go find a tough mob. We'd put
the best warrior at the front and attack in a sort of order, so that
when the warrior eventually had to flee (eg., when our clerics ran
out of mana) it'd fall upon the person who we deemed the next
toughest. All the way down to our clerics, who we tried to keep
alive long enough so that they could heal the warriors who would
'rescue' into the fight. The order would dissolve after the first
time through it and on occassion we had our clerics stand aside (so
that they could heal us and weren't hit). Often times, though, the
little damage a cleric did was the difference between life and death
for several of our group members. I'm not certain if any other
players ever bothered to create a "tanking order" of sorts so that
the clerics and mages would live longer and be able to save all the
warriors at the fore-front.
