I did some analysis on this before. Theoretically (which means nothing to the real world) you should be able to sustain 33 tcp connections to your mud. I figure the average telnet session into a mud has an average downstream transfer rate of 1k/s per connection (which is a generous assumption). Of course all muds vary due to the amount of text per room, player communication channels, color code, etc.. I put up my mud once on a dedicated ISDN line that connected at 115200 bps pretty reliably. I started seeing lag around 80 connections, so the theory does not hold in my particular case. You must also remember that if they are on a modem connection as well, the latency is doubled.
