This isn't actually too hard. As a matter of fact, if you have any sort of color patch installed, you can add new definitions, and instead of the ascii color, you put out the correct code for your symbol. Though, you'll want to make sure that the terminal they're using supports it. You could add in the entire extended character set and most people won't see diddly-squat.
