To elaborate a bit, the main risk would be if you had MUD users that also had shell accounts, due to the human tendancy of duplicating login/password names. If you don't allow any of your MUD users shell access, and if you use a completely different login name and password for your own shell account, AND if you use SSH or some other encrypted protocol for your shell access, you should not have too many worries.
