i would want to give you an easy solution to your problem which will not
only have to waste your time on more headache on coding but also put your
misery to end. why not you just create an object 'sign' and put on the
keyword and extra description on that. decorations should be regarded as
objects. this will also help in other future expansions of your MUD like
triggers, durability, etc. in another perspective this method would make a
room seems to be filled with objects which was first intended to be
decorations.
