This is a bug in NCSA Telnet, in which it sends garbled strings when
connecting to any port other than 23.  If you have a Mac, get Better
Telnet, since NCSA stopped support Telnet long ago.  Better Telnet is
based on NCSA Telnet but is much more up to date.
