Clans on my MUD are a role-playing aspect. As you said, it gives the
characters (and players) a sense of belonging and something to work for.
One of the requirements of getting into a clan is accomplishing a quest
that the leader of the clan decides upon. Yes, the leader could just let
any Schmo into the clan, but that is 'Frowned Upon'.

Another benifit is safety... If you are a PThief or Murderer, then you
are not safe anywhere on the MUD. People can attack you anywhere, even in
PEACEFUL rooms. If you are a member of a Clan, you can get into your
clan-hall, and no-one (other than fellow clan members) can enter (unless
they have a key). This means that you have a place that is (mostly) safe
to rest and relax.
