Finally, after months of waiting, the Society for the Promotion Of Original Circlemuds is ready to begin operation! Unlike previously thought (and stated), the SPOOC is not a group of MUD-bashers who go around listing every mud they think "sucks" on the internet. Instead, we are a group of MUD Coders, Administrators, and Builders that are working to improve the overall quality of CircleMUDs by offering incintives and discussion areas for originality based topics and muds. Currently, the main purpose of the SPOOC is to rate muds that apply for SPOOC membership, and then list them on one of 3 lists on the website. (Recommended Circlemuds, Other Recommended Mudtypes, and Unrecommended Circlemuds) Yes, I know there is a "Unrecommended Circlemuds" list, but the only way to get placed on this list is to apply for membership and fail miserably. If this happens, the mud admin will be notified of the reasons for failing, and may reapply in 1 month. Currently, requirements for membership are as follows: 1) You must own/work for a MUD that meets the MUD requirements set out below, or you must not own/work for a MUD at all. 2) You must have good netequitte. (No constant flaming, etc) The MUD Requirements are: 1) The mud must not have more than 5 non original, non-limbo mortal accessable zones (Mortal Accessable - The God Simplex doesnt count, Midgaard does. This is not put in place to say that the CAW zones are bad or anything, only that they are overused and show lack of originality on a MUD's part.) (If a zone is distributed over the net, it is counted as non-original unless it was originally designed for the mud. Modified versions of these zones count against the 5 non original, non-limbo mortal accessable zones) 2) The mud must treat players in a fair and hospitable mannor. (AKA - No random player killings, purgings, deletions, etc) 3) The mud must have at least one non-stock, non-patch piece of code (Major code, not socials and the like) (A rewritten patch does count so long as the rewritten parts can clearly be seen). 4) The MUD must must not have applied for membership, or at least 1 month must have elapsed since the mud has last applied for membership. If a mud has applied for membership more than 3 times, it cannot reapply for a period determined by the Society. SPOOC Purpose: To promote and otherwise assist original CircleMUDs, as well as to provide a forum for muds to discuss originality and originality based issues. SPOOC Membership Method: Currently, all that is needed is for someone to send mail to spooc-request@mud2.gator.net with the word 'subscribe' somewhere in the body. In about a week, all the muds that have joined SPOOC will be evaluated and either given Member or Initiate status. At this time, the subscription method will be changed to require a waiting period to join the SPOOC. Also, at this time subscription to the SPOOC mailing list will (normally) denote membership.
