Scholastic Matchmakers, Step by Step

Step 6: Selling your Compatibility Lists

Again, the first rule is publicity. Every single person in the school must know exactly where and when to buy the compatibility lists. (See #1 on publicity.)

Selling Points to emphasize:

Curiosity
Everyone wants to know who their best and worst matches are, even if they don't need a date.

Conversation
The Compatibility Lists may give someone an excuse to start a conversation with someone whom he/she has always wanted to talk to. It will definitely make for some entertaining discussions with friends.

Charity
Sales go to support student organization activities-- it might even go to support everyone's activities, depending on how your organization is planning to use the money.

Contest
In addition to all the other great reasons to buy both Compatibility Lists, some students (At least one at every school) will win compact discs of their choice. Buying two Lists means two chances to win!

Find a date
And, of course, you just might find a date.

Selling Procedure

Set up a table in the cafeteria during lunch, and in the main hall before and after school. Staff the table with as many people as you can, because there will be a big crowd, with everyone reaching for their Compatibility Lists at once.

Sell the compatibility lists for a full week, or until they are all sold. Always collect the buyer's money before you even let them see their Compatibility Lists. Some people will glance at their List before paying, and if their favorite person isn't their number one match, they'll decide not to pay for it. Don't let that happen.

You may want to give people a discount if they buy two Lists instead of just one.

After you have sold a lot of the Lists, you may want to contact people who haven't purchased their Lists yet, to make sure that they know their Lists are in. This is especially true if not all the winners of CDs have purchased their Lists yet. You may be able to sell 100% of the Lists if you make this kind of special effort.
